Year 5 is an exciting and challenging year for the children. They are now in the ‘upper school’ and are expected to take a more mature and independent approach towards learning. These skills are developed throughout the year and the children will have excellent opportunities to take part in a range of activities and to develop key life skills. We look forward to working closely with you and your child over the next year.

Meet the Teacher 2025
Daily
Each day, you child will need:
- A water bottle.
- Their reading book and reading record.
- A pencil case which includes a handwriting pen in blue and a pencil.
English
Reading
It is important that all children continue to read to and discuss texts with an adult on a regular basis.
Please sign reading records weekly and listen to your child read as often as possible, focusing on expression and fluency (as a storyteller).
In Year 5, we use the Reading Fluency Project to practise reading and comprehension strategies. This could be in a small-group or whole-class setting, but the principle remains the same: to increase stamina, intonation, expression, confidence, enjoyment – and thus improve comprehension – of a text through modelled expressive reading, echo reading, repeated re-reading, skilled questioning, challenging text selection and modelling comprehension skills.
Please support your child by asking questions involving the following skills: retrieval, inference, explaining words in context, summarising and predicting. A list of useful questions can be found on the school website under Guided Reading Support.

Spelling
Spelling lists are given to the children every Friday. The children are given opportunities throughout the week to learn them, find definitions and write them in context etc. Spellings are based on spelling patterns/rules, personal errors such as common words and topic words. The children are then tested on these words the following Friday in a dictation passage.

Handwriting & Pace
Neat, joined fluent handwriting is strongly encouraged, as is the importance of pace when writing. Children should write in blue pen or pencil.

Home Learning and other information
Home Learning is explained and given out each Friday. It should be completed by the following Wednesday. Home Learning is completed each week as it supports and consolidates what is being taught in class.
Home learning will consist of a spelling task, Maths and English. In the case that a project has been set, the children may get longer, for example, 2 weeks.

Maths
Please ensure that children practise mental maths and time tables regularly at home to build up their skills in rapid recall of number facts and their ability to manipulate number mentally. It is best to keep practices short and as much fun as possible.
